Electronics Traineeship / employment

G'day all

I feel that my career path has gone in the wrong direction. I started out
using computers and am now programming business systems (8 years). What I
really want to do is to get involved in electronics and programming. I want
to design electronics circuits and interface them to the PC.

I am currently enrolled in an Electronics Engineering Tafe course. I am
learning digital, analog and loads of electronics theory. Have completed a
number of subjects already and am finding the more I learn the more interest
I have in it.

What I want to know is where can I go from here ? How much will I need to
know to get commercially involved in electronics ?

Are there traineeships around ? Or maybe apprenticeships ?

Do companies often hire people who need on the job training ?

Who else has been in my position and what did you do ?

Cheers

Which state are you in?

You seem like gold ! So many starters in this game now grit their
teeth with the electronics itself & just yearn for a keyboard...
compounded of course by todays throwaway consumer electronic items
that fail to motivate. You know how it goes - "Your cell phone's 2
years old !?" = chuck it out

Sounds like a R&D field could suit ? Research lab. tech ? What aspect
of electronics are you most taken with ? Thought - Ham Radio may be a
great outlet ? Had a play with microcontrollers ( Picaxes ?).

Thought: Keep your day job & do some consultancy yourself after hours-
many small firms now struggle with the white hot changes & may PAY you
to devise solutions. Here in NZ I seem to run across such needs on a
weekly basis. Hang out at DSE/Jaycar & overhear the customers laments
!? Put your business card up there maybe ? Sales staff are often run
off their feet with techie Qs Ex just got chatting to such a weekend
customer who'd lost his Compaq notebooks 17.5V 1.8A PSU & needed a
replacement FAST ( to finish a report by Monday). DSE couldn't help &
Compaq were closed. OK what would YOU suggest in the $50 range that
could be working in an hour? Earlier in the week it was a sparkie - "
How do I test if this SCR is shot" ? & then " I need to measure my
fridges power consumption" ... Go to it

Stick with software. Go with .NET. Better money, better working conditions.
