Electronics Starters Kit?

Hello.

I'm trying to learn electronics. I'm reading an intro layman's book
to the subject ("There Are No Electrons"). And I'm soon gonna finish
that. My next book will be more hands on, and requires that I purchase
some electronics 'stuff'.

Where can I buy a good electronics starters kit? I don't know if one of
those "50-in-1" kits will do. I went to college for mathematics and
my EE classmates had these "EE kits". I think I need one of those. I use
to work at a bio-electronics lab and they had 'thingies' that looked
straight out of those EE kits.

So I figure professionals use EE kits instead of the Radio Shack
50 in 1 kits. I know that last sentence sounds pretty stupid.

Anyways, can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Actually, the "300-in-1" kit (280-0270) looks kind of fun. It includes
enough parts to get you started, where otherwise you're stuck with
buying a Big Bag'O Resistors etc.

As you work through it you can pick up other tools, test equipment, and
components and build up your kit to match your interests.
