Electronic Fence Controller - Help required

hello,

Can anyone either give me instructions or tell me were I can buy a kit
in Australia to build an Elecrtic Fence controller.

It only needs to power a very small strand of wire, about 20 - 30m.

It does not need to be very powerful as it is only to deter cats from a
garden.

I have been told you can build this with a wet cell but have not been
able to find any further info.

Even though I don't particularly like cats I do not want to cause any
permanent damage.

Thanks

Pat

dick smiths or jaycar used to sell a kit . used a car coil , stopped
people pissing on the garden quite well. zzttt FTARTDWB
thump as they collapsed hehehe .

Visions of Ren and Stimpy: Stimpy while playing his most favorite game in
the whole world, "Don't wizz on the electric fence" has Ren saying "This is
what I think of your game" (FX: ziiip)

I used to work near a club , pricks kept wizzing through the front
fence killing the garden so I stopped them .. I didn't feel a thing .

Jaycar certainly had a low energy energiser kit, which utilised a car
ignition coil, but I'm not sure if they still do as I stopped
supporting them when they replaced their printed catalogue with a CD
that couldn't be installed on my hard drive. IIRC the circuit they
used came from either Silicon chip or EA (now defunct).

It only needs to power a very small strand of wire, about 20 - 30m.

All fence energisers, at least all those likely to be legal, operate
on the capacitor discharge principle. To operate from a dc source
they require and inverter circuit (to charge the capacitor), a timer
circuit, a trigger circuit and an output transformer (which is what
Jaycar's used the ignition coil for).

Even though I don't particularly like cats I do not want to cause any
permanent damage.
Provided you stick with the legal devices (which certainly includes
all the commercially available energisers) unless they've been fitted
with pacemakers the cats should recover fairly quickly.

This isn't the usual capacitor discharge device and, unlike any
commercial unit I'm aware of, has nothing to limit the energy output
other than the collector current of the 2N3055 and the coupling
characteristics of the ignition coil.

Most modern fence energisers are NZ origin, where stringent
regulations apply (NZ has long been a world leader in electric fence
technology). I'm not even sure if Oz has similar regulations but the
NZ compliant units generally don't exceed 5kV under load and have
pulse repetition rates of around 1200mS. The latter, among other
things, gives unwitting victims time to extricate themselves before
the next pulse hits.

In these litigious times you probably should consider what might
happen is someone's ticker stops as a result of their being connected
to the cat fence -- unless you happen to have much better public
liability insurance than I do. :)

AFAIK any electric fence is also required to have warning signs.

Alternative suggestion that would be free of litigation.

Connect a sensor or two (alarm system style) to an irrigation solenoid. Run
a few sprinkler heads around the garden.

If there is one thing that cats don't like, it's getting wet.

Of course if it isn't really a cat .........

Wayne.

hello,

thanks for all the responses.

I like the last Idea about the sensors and the irrigation solenoid :)
an yes it is a cat.
