Electric fence

I'm planning to build 3 small electric fence around my orange tree to
stop possums 'stealing' them.

Planning to build it with a stardard 12V ignition coil. Just wondering
if i can power it with a computer power supply? If so how safe will it
be(apart from moisture and weather issues)? Thanks!

Be careful! Having seen the effects on a friend of improper contact with

electric fence, these things can be dangerous particularly to those with
weak hearts (and bladders). You'd be better off buying an off the shelf
one, or a kit that someone's put a bit of engineering effort into. Silicon
chip had a project last millennium doing exactly what you're proposing
(though I don't think they used a computer power supply). This guy sells a

A double insulated plug pack might be a better choice than a computer power
supply. Some power supplies bring 240V to the on/off switch which is
dangerous. The fact that computer power supplies are unsealed is likely to
make them inherently less reliable as is the fact that they need a fan to
keep operating. A lot of computer supplies need a substantial load on the
+5V line before you can draw a current from the 12V line.

The models based on a car ignition coils usually finish up being a bit
more tame than commercial electric fence controllers. The high
impedance of the coil means that it doesn't take much circuit
resistance between the coil and the 'zappee' to weaken the jolt. Ideal
for a one-off protection of an item against animals.

Commercial controllers have a much lower output impedance, intended
for driving longer fence runs and generally pack a heftier zap. A
commercial controller is no less a problem for people with weak hearts
than ignition coil versions and, no doubt, the reason why the clear
presence of warning signs on, say, farm properties near to public
access is a legislative must-have.

Otherwise you could be liable for any damage caused by the unit and any
insurance cover for that area would become invalid.
You would be far better off buying a commercial unit. Try any rural/farm

Place a large length (1m or so) piece of 100 -> 250mm stormwater
around the trunk. You'll have to get an angle grinder and cut a slot
along it so that you can get it to fit around the trunk. If the
fuckers are jumping from other objects nearby then you may need to do
them too.

I've done it to the incoming power / cable tv to stop the critters
coming along them. They can still make their way over a horizontal 1m
length but I've watched them and certainly acts as a major deterent.
Vertical is near impossible.

Look again, it's been taken off their lists. Only find I could come up with
is a jaycar pre-built module that is rather low power and they claim designed
only for vegie patches.

And while you're there, assurance a design complies with any australian
standard is meaningless unless each and every device is tested to that
standard. When you're talking about end-user-built units, all bets are off.

australian standards (unless you claim it does) but DO have to comply with the
C-Tick interference emmissions limits for that type of device. And then only if
they're being sold.

You're allowed to hand out for free any device that doesn't comply with any
australian standards or c-tick standards, or hand out for free any plans for
such devices.

It doesn't indemnify you from any legal action should your box kill or injure
anyone, but otherwise, you can hand it out freely.
