EL (Electroluminecencent) displays?

Hi,

I have a radio scanner in which the back lit EL panel has become very
dim. I understand that the EL panel can be slid out and removed from
behind the LCD display, for replacement, but replacements are no longer
available. I am only assuming it is the EL panel at fault, because it
is suggested to be a common fault.

Is there some method by which I could revitalise the brightness of the
existing panel?

Are these things made to standard sizes, perhaps one could be found
which is a near fit which might do?

Perhaps so.

There isn't really much you can do.

I don't yet know the size, it is a planned job on a Pro 2006 scanner.

There's lots of surplus companies that sell EL panels, you can use scissors
to cut them to size as long as you don't cut off the power connections,
they're pretty cool devices.

You are the second to confirm that they can be cut down to size, which
makes the task of finding a replacement that much easier. I have not
yet been able to find a source for any at all yet, apart from LCD
displays with them built in. Perhaps my best bet might be to find a
piece of scrap equipment with a panel in which is removable.

Apparently EL back lights are used by model railway enthusiasts, I have
found a US supplier of DIY kit. http://www.microstru.com/exp2.html

How do you keep moisture from getting in at the cut edge??

Back when I worked with glass EL,
it was VERY important to keep the water out.

One of the companies which sell DIY kits for model railway hobbyists,
in their kit seems to use something similar looking to Sellotape to
seal the cut edges. I don't think Sellotape would help, I believe it
absorbs moisture. I suspect a good way might be the use of Super-glue
run along the edge, does anyone have any comments on sealing these cut
edges?

I'd try sliding in a sheet of very thin 'etched' glass and side-lighting it with a bright blue or white LED or two.

Depending on the size of the display, you could use the EL panel from a
night light.
