DVD-VCR combos

My wife is convalescing after knee replacement surgery and it would be nice
to set up a bedroom entertainment center for her. I know nothing about
these combo units. What should I look for? Thanks!

Look for separate units, the combos are nothing but trouble. The quality is
very poor & when one unit fails you've lost both units!

Agreed..... with a capital A.

How can they really be any worse than a 39.00 standalone dvd player?
I've seen some Hitachi and Sanyo units that weren't all that bad, as these
things go.

Except for the fact that when one breaks, you are out both units while they
get repaired. And then there is the large number of these things on Ebay
with dud DVD players already. Might be a clue.

Or how about $119 for the cheapest, eljunko brand DVD VCR combo unit.
Versus $59 for an slightly better brand DVD player and another $69 for a
slightly better brand VCR. Then if one breaks, you still have the other one
for movies and only have to pay out the lower amount of money instead of the
full amount to replace it.

The VCR section in these combo units appear to be absolutely genuine cheap
junk as opposed to just cheap junk in the latest and cheapest standalone VCR
offerings......

Avoid the combos all together, one part is bound to fail before the other
and then you're left with a paperweight, I suggest finding separate units,
DVD players are really cheap these days, and decent used VCR's are easy to
find as well.

Is this better ?

I suppose the only advantage might be that you could swap the
mechanism over on the VCR section.

Also, some older TVs did not have a SCART, so you run into this stupid
macrovision problem if you run the signal through a VCR to get it to
the TV , the all-in-one units do not seem to have this problem.
