DVD player reads only CDs...

Hi all,

as said, my friend's DVD player (2 years old) reads burned video CD but
can't find the start of an original DVD. The tech guys didn't want to lose
time on it and just suggested to change the whole "engine" (nearly the
price of a new unit)...but maybe the problem is not so critical and just
needs time and patience to be fixed. Could it be an "alignment" problem? I
could try to open and to tweak it a bit, I'm not completely new to
disassembling...but I have no idea what to do in this case.
Please let me know your suggestions, if you can redirect me to faq's or
whatever, I would appreciate it :)

It depends on if it uses separate red (DVD) and infrared (CD) lasers. If
so, then the red laser has probably died or has something else seriously
wrong with it. The infrared is working, which is why it can read CD's.

Ok thanks Andrew,
is there a way to check it? And, sould one laser be broken, are we talking
about a component which may be "easily" substituted, or is it definitely a
no solution problem?

If it is unable to operate at two different laser frequencies anymore, then you
have to replace the entire laser optical pickup.

What DVD player are we talking about here? Brand and model number, please. -

This is variable. Some laser pickups are sold as complete assemblies with
motors, etc, prealigned and pretty much ready to go. Many people, armed with
a screwdriver and a bit of common sense, could replace it themselves.
Other models require alignment - some easy, some difficult, but all
requiring the service literature.
The problem is cost. With prices of new (cheapie) DVD players so low,
replacing a pickup in an existing player often makes no sense from an
economic standpoint.

Brand and model info would be helpful.

The unit is a Universum DVD-DR 3015

It was sold by a big german company, Quelle, which has its own brand for
tech objects...I've no service manual...do you think it is a right of the
owner to get detailed informations, a repair manual or something like that?

Thanks,

Michele

Here is the info:

Universum DVD-DR 3015

I wasn't able to find too much on this machine, beside the operating
instructions...I suspect it's going to be hard since the guys speak
German...

Even if you could get hold of a service manual, it will probably cost more
than a new DVD player.

A little Googling suggests these are made in Malaysia or China by a company
called Eastern Asia Technology Limited (EasTech).

This strongly suggests it is a "cheapie" not worth a serious repair effort.
Repair parts may not even be available.

Ok thanks guys,

by the way Mark this is not so cheap...it costed 400 Euro (but maybe this
was because it has also those satellites...surround speaker system..bla
bla..).
More than that, would you tell me where did you find the information about
the Eastern Asia Tech limited? I wasn't able to find it...

I Google searched the term, "universum vendor". I think I put DVD in there,
too.
Since yours is a complete system, and cost a bit more money, then by all
means keep looking for parts, etc. Try contacting Universum's distributor in
your country and see what they do for parts.

OK Mark,

I'll try to get some info from Quelle or Universum or Eas Tech...I
understood it right, I should look for the "optical pickup"?
We'll see..

Thanks for helping,
