DVD firmware question

I have two DVD players (Sylvania DVC850C and Panasonic DVD-RV31) that are
giving me loading errors. The Sylvania won't read any dvd, and displays
"LOADING" error message that won't go away no matter what function you
select or if you unplug the unit and power up again. The Panasonic displays
a numeric error also. Both manufacturers say the units must be brought in
to update or re-flash the firmware.

My question is where can I get the original firmware for these units, along
with instructions? I do all my own repairs, but this seems out of my hands
for now. Thanks in advance

They will not normaly give or sell you the firmware copy. But, you can ask.
If it is for reloading, you will
require their dedicated set-up to do this. The player will probably require
recalibration after the re-load. The proper specialized equipment and
service manuals are required to do the work. Some firmware updates require
the changing of the related IC's. These are all mostly SMD types.

This is the way of the new electronics of today. These machines use all SMD
technology, which I would doubt you have the soldering equipment to begin
with, unless you are a service centre that does SMD type repairs. And, for
the specialized type of service, you would require the factory equipment
set-up to do the software part, and the extension jigs for some models to
troubleshoot them.

Firmware may or may not fix them. Do they play any DVD's at all?
Some companies, like Hitachi, make the firmware easily available. One can
download it and burn it to a CD.
Others, like Yamaha, are not so accommodating.

Don't know about Sylvania (Funai) or Panasonic.

Firmware revision probably won't change the laser etc setups unless the
eeprom is also replaced. Even so, many manufacturers use only mechanical
adjustments for the laser-related stuff. For example, the circuit cannot
adjust for tilt unless there is a tilt motor installed. To reduce cost,
newer units generally omit this part, and the mech is adjusted mechanically.

Funai is not a very good brand of DVD player to begin with.

Panasonic usually OEMs Yamaha players, so you can guess how they will be in
terms of firmware updates. Although, ironically enough, Panasonic is one of
the few brands of DVD players I would ever recommend to anyone.

As for Hitachi, a lot of their players were originally made by Samsung. -

Try going over to www.sysopt.com.

They have loads of forums on computer hardware etc...
They can point you to the urls if they can't answer your questions
outright.
BTW it seems to me that there's a forum online dedicated to DVD
players. Can't find the url in my bookmarks tho'.
I'll poke around and repost when I find it.
