Dual Potentiometer sources

lately I've had a lot of OLD equipment (I repair industrial Food
Equipment...some over 20 years old) that all use dual potentiometers.
Surprise, surprise.....these are becoming incredibly difficult to find.
Anyone have a source for a wide variety of values of dual pots?.
Thanks,
Kim

Segor Electronics in Berlin has the Piher line with metal shafts: they
list 4mm shaft, linear taper, dual versions with 100, 250, 500, 1k,
2.5k, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k, and 1M; 4mm shaft,
logarithmic taper, dual versions with 2.5k, 5k, 10k, 25k, 50k, 100k,
250k, 500k, and 1M; and 6mm shaft, dual versions with the same values
plus 1k, 2.5M, and 5M logarithmic.

Martin.

I've spent a fair amount of time researching this.

The bottom line is that I have found no good sources that carry a wide
variety of dual pots. When you start considering the various options like
taper, resistive material, shaft size, bushing size, terminal style,
resistance value and so forth, there are a lot of different possibilities;
any given distributor seems to stock only a small few.

Minimum orders for custom-made pots by Bourns, Clarostat, Alps, etc. are at
least 1k, and lead times are several months.

The best overall selection I've found is from Mouser Electronics
(http://www.mouser.com), but it's still a very limited range. Their
Alpha/Xicon dual 24mm pots are a lot like the old Ohmite ones you might be
encountering.

Try State Electronics, www.potentiometers.com . I've never used them, but
they look interesting. They claim they'll make up prototype quantities of
custom pots using Bourns, Clarostat, etc., modular pieces on short order.
I've no idea what they charge.

I have talked to their rep and gotten quotes from them. They're very nice
and responsive. Unfortunately, "prototype quantities" don't mean quite the
same thing to them that they do to me. The lead times etc. for custom pots
that I quoted in my earlier response took State Electronics into account (as
well as some other attempts at ordering custom pots).

Bottom line is if you want something custom you're looking at at least 1k
units, from every vendor I've tried. I guess the labor cost of assembling
modular units by hand in unit quantities would make the cost of the pots
high enough that no one would order them.

Hmm, interesting. (At least, as interesting as a German distributor can be
for a US-based engineer...)

In the states, Mouser carries Piher pots; but they don't list any metal
shaft ones, nor any with audio taper, nor I think any that are dual. I
wonder if I can find a US distributor that has the full line.

What kind of conductive material do they use? Has anyone tried these, and
if so, any comments?

Thanks for the lead!

After a little Googling...

Piher's product web page: http://www.piher-nacesa.com/product.htm

They list Mouser as their sole US catalog distributor, so it's interesting
that Mouser lists only a small fraction of their products. I'm sure they
can get more, with the same large minimum orders and long lead times that
everyone else has :-( But maybe I'll call one of their sales reps anyhow
and see what the story is.

I know of 2 companies in Vancouver, Canada that may still carry these.
I don't live there, but If you E-mail me, I could phone them long
distance and check it out. Its Too early now, only 5AM.

The Subject line must include the word "Electronic" or it got to the
trash.

Take care.......Gary
