Welkom - Another little girl is beginning a long slow road to recovery after
being tossed into boiling water allegedly by her aunt.
The four-year-old is recovering at Bongani hospital in Welkom.
The toddler suffered second degree burns on her legs, left arm, buttocks
and genitals.
Her aunt has been arrested and faces charges of assault with intent to
cause grievous bodily harm.
The family is battling to understand the aunt's actions.
"I feel so sad. I was freaked out. I don't know what happened," said the
victims mother.
Police are investigating the matter.
"We've learnt that perhaps she was under the influence of... perhaps
substance abuse and thereafter that's when she put the child into the
boiling pot," said police Spokesperson Stephen Thakeng.
While the little girl seems to be recovering well, she will be
evaluated at the end of the month to determine whether she would need
surgery.
Due to the burns, she is unable to use the bathroom, increasing her risk
of infection.
She is also receiving daily physiotherapy to prevent her muscles from
contracting.
Her aunt will appear in court on Tuesday.-eNCA
