drawing schematics using text symbols

I recall seeing a reference somewhere for freeware that draws schematics
using text symbols. Could someone please supply a reference to it? My
queries to Google have, for once, not got me anywhere.
On the same topic, what's a good font for viewing these schematics? TIA
