I found some 2N3053s on Ebay, but the seller only accepts GBP (I can't
blame him since the conversion cost is exorbitant). I don't want to
bid on something that will cause me to have to go to the bank and get
a M.O. for GBP or some other hassle. Does Ebay and Paypal do
conversion to GBP?

Might there be any customs hassle with these kinds of parts? Yeah, I
know that shipping might be a bit slow or cost a bit more but that
didn't concern me. Thanks.

I bought some white LEDs from Hong Kong, no problem but I did have to
go to the P.O. and sign for them, no big thing.

I use Paypal to buy from eBay.com and eBay.co.uk and it takes whatever you
pay in with, apparently, no conversion issues.

I have shipped both ways and it depends how the parcel is labelled, value
and things.

If it is of interest to you I am supposed to be going to Boston (from the
UK) around the 20th Jan. If you want you can post them to me and I will post
them when I get to the US, 25 transistors are not going to break my back :).
This only works if you are not in a hurry because though I have to go, the
date keeps moving. You can email me on dknpower at ntlworld dot com if you
want to.

Thanks for the offer. But I'm hoping that it won't be that much of a
problem, because there are many other items in GBP, so it could get to
be a regular thing. And I don't want to have to depend on couriers
every time, if you know what I mean. Your thoughtfulness is
appreciated.

I think I should go thru the online help stuff to find out more, maybe
the answer is in there somewhere. I'll followup if there's any new
info.

Hey, when you get to Bean Town, watch out for those guys dressed up as
indians, throwing tea in the harbor! ;-)

On Ebay I clicked on the help button and searched for currency
conversion. I finally got to a screen telling about Paypal, so I
clicked on the link, and in Paypal I clicked on the demo button.
After several screens of explaining how it works, the last screen said
this.

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/sell/mc/mc_intro-outside

Continuing to Use Your Account As You Do Today

Multiple Currencies doesn't mean you have to change the way you use
your PayPal account: If you would like to maintain one balance, just
convert your payments to your Primary Currency when you accept them.
Remember, you can always use Multiple Currencies to send money in
Canadian Dollars, Euros, Pounds Sterling, and Yen. However you fund
the payment, PayPal will automatically convert the amount for you.

So yeah, I guess I can bid on an idem in GBP and pay them in GBP, and
it will charge my acct in USD.

Yes, you can select what currency you want to pay in:

US$, Canadian$, Euros, GBP, or JPY. They would make a bit (maybe 1-2%)
on the conversion rate, but I doubt it's anything to get excited about
for less than $1,000. IIRC, they are not too clear on what exactly
they base their conversion rates on.

Shouldn't be. Semiconductors are all (AFAIK) duty free to the US and
Canada. Airmail is easiest, if you use a courier make sure you won't
get dinged for brokerage charges at your end.
