Does Dell limit optional devices in Laptops ?

I am trying to install a CD-RW / DVD Drive, Toshiba Model # SF-R2102 (Ver #
300 ROM Ver # 1315) in a Dell Latitude C600 Notebook with Bios A22 (latest)

Upond boot, the machine displays a menu stating:

The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified...

ESC to power down or press the Power button to retry detection

Anyone know of a workaround for this or does Dell intentionally limit their
systems to specific drives.

Thanks in advance,

From our experience, you have to use DELL original options for most add-ons.
This is the same for many of the main name brand machines. On their desktop
machines we have sometimes been able to find software patches to force the
BIOS of the machine to see the device.

Your best bet is to contact DELL for information, and also the manufacture
of the device to be added on. For some popular add-ons they will recommend
a driver download, or some type of procedure.
