Did Aus ever get LED replacement bulbs.

A while ago there was a fair bit of discussion about CFLs - lots of useful
information even for me in the UK.

LED bulbs don't seem to have roused the same interest, I kind of miss the
information resource.

Got a 3W LED bulb from the Ł1 store a while back - its running OK so
far.....................

Its at least as bright as the 7W CFL it replaced.

**My favourite source for LED lamps is Aldi. When I first moved to my
present home, I replaced the 75 Watt, reflector lamps in my bathrooms
with 24 Watt Philips CFLs. This provided a little more useful light in
the rooms. More recently, I found some Aldi 7.5 Watt LED lamps which
provide almost as much light (as measured with a light meter) in the
room as the CFLs. I also replaced 13 X 50 Watt halogen downlights with
13 X 4.5 Watt LEDs (also Aldi types). Light output is somewhat less, but
plenty for all practical purposes. 60 Watt IC lamps in exterior fixtures
were replaced with Aldi 9 Watt LED lamps to great effect. MUCH better
light output than the old IC lamps and superior colour temperatures to
the cheap CFLs. I starting to replace my linear fluoros in my workshop
with some of these (100 Watt types):

** LED lamps that can replace regular 75watt bulbs or 20 watt spiral CFLs are scarce and still too expensive for most folk to bother with.

I did find a 15watt, 1300lumen LED bulb at an store this year (on special for $10) and it is a CFL killer:

Fully sealed, near unbreakable, light output equal to a 75W halogen, instant fully on at winter temps, nice 2700K colour, dimmable, rated for 25,000 hours AND 100,000 on/off cycles.

Perfect for the bathroom.

Made in China of course, but with a German brand name: "Muller Licht".

Coles brand 10W Cool White LED globes are quite good.
Normal cost is $20 for a two pack, I got a couple on 1/2 price special.

Great colour and brightness (by eye). Quite directional - light is "down
and out". Great for vertically mounted use but they might not be so good
for oyster style light fittings where the globe lays on its side.

Used for about 4 hours per day over the last 2 months and they seem fine.

**Yup. That's an Aldi brand. Got one in the living room. It's a rip-snorter.

I bought a 4.5W 12V GU5.3 LED reflector lamp from Aldi several years ago
that was in the specials bin for a couple of bucks. The intention was to
take out the LED and put it into a 20W halogen desklamp. When I
dismantled it , turned out the LED was a 'Bridgelux' 5W 12V, apparently
a quality manufacturer. I mounted the LED on heatsink together with the
rectifier that came with it and modified the desklamp to fit it. Works
extremely well, heatsink is just warm to the touch, no fan, and the
transformer runs MUCH cooler. The light is better too, more even.
Could have just bought a LED desklamp, but it was more rewarding to
re-use than create more waste.

My nearest Aldi is in a nearby town I rarely visit - next time I do, I'll
make a point of looking in there.

The Ł1 store didn't have any 3W lights left when I looked the other day, my
kitchen has 2 light sockets on the same switch, so a couple of those 3W LED
bulbs would probably be enough.

At Ł1, I didn't expect them to be any good, but the one I put in the hall is
just fine.

LED bulbs are still silly money in the UK, and I've yet to find equivalent
to more than 60W at any price.

I wanted a couple more 3W units from the Ł1 store to put in the kitchen and
leave on 24/7, the one in the hall is just fine and the kitchen has 2 lamp
sockets - so just about enough light.

The original was a clear glass "candle" bulb that was pretty bright for only
3W, on the last visit they only had a frosted glass globe type - good
enough, but I'd have gone for more of the "candle" bulbs if they had any.

For the time being; there's only an advantage with LED bulbs that are left
on for long periods and less light isn't a problem. As yet they only give a
small saving compared to CFLs.

Has anyone got experience with the so called "corn-cob" LED bulbs?

They did come up on an Ebay search listed in GBŁ, but from overseas source.

I'm wary about ordering overseas, a few years back I ordered a kit from
Jaycar. Royal Mail stung me a racketeering 'handling charge' of about half
as much again as the price of the kit to collect a few pounds import duty.

In Germany they don't charge any duty if the invoice says it's worth
less than 50Euro or so. I've had imports from China held up because the
invoice wasn't on the outside of the parcel, but even then all they did
was photocopy the label and post me a letter. All I had to do was email
them the invoice and they sent the parcel straight away. No extra
charges whatsoever. What the fuck is going on in the UK?

We in Australia are about to start that stunt, up till now we got away

it will cost.

In Germany they don't charge any duty if the invoice says it's worth
less than 50Euro or so. I've had imports from China held up because
the invoice wasn't on the outside of the parcel, but even then all
they did was photocopy the label and post me a letter. All I had to do
was email them the invoice and they sent the parcel straight away. No
extra charges whatsoever. What the fuck is going on in the UK?

The catchphrase; "rip off Britain" is on everyone's lips.

We in Australia are about to start that stunt, up till now we got away
with no tax up to $1000.00, do not know what the threshold is going to
be, Dont know what the gain will be as the monstrous machine to enforce
it will cost.

Probably there will be a $50 "handling charge" demanded by Australia
Post from the customer, and the goods will be held hostage for a couple
of weeks delay whilst they process the payment. This will mean that a $5
cable from China will be $55.50, and therefore it will only be a factor
of two cheaper than the Australian price for the same product.

Certainly just adding the 10% GST (or 15% - 20% as it may be by then) to
the price of the goods will be nowhere near enough to make the local
retailers competitive, so they will have to add some sort of flat
handling fee. After all, the local retailers have to defend their right
to import the products from China for us, it is a valuable industry that
the country can't afford to lose.

if you can get vendor co-operation cost can be very low.

some billing providers are already doing this. eg when we sell
service on a US server to a UK xustomer, clickbank.com collects VAT.

(yeah, how can that be right?)
