Designing gadgets

This might be a vague question. I have an idea of a gadget in mind -
this gadget basically involves some motors controlled by
firmware/software programmed on EPROMs etc. I want to make a prototype
of this gadget, but really don't know how to start.

Is there any book, website that can assist me in this. Basically,
example of making small gadgets from mechanical, electronic components
available in retail.

Robotics hobbyist books, websites, magazines etc. will cover the
technology you need.
