My dell latitude motherboard will not charge the battery. Power supply
shorts when i plug it in.Does anybody have any schematics for this, or what
could be shorted out on the board, thanks joe.

Schematic for a motherboard in a laptop. Might as well be asking for a
billion dollars.

Dell's part to fix the problem, the whole motherboard.

Any competant technician with experience working on high density surface
mount boards will be able to at least rule out a simple failure in a few
minutes. After that it is ne MB time.

Even the Dell service department doesn't do component level service on
these. So, they would not have the schematics themselves. A very
experienced tech who is used to, and is equipped to work on SMD type circuit
boards, may be able to service it, if it is a very simple short. Otherwise,
a new mother board is the solution. There is also a chance that the short
may be on some plugging module, a RAM, or a drive, or something else. Did
you try to disconnect all the add-ons first?

Do you know what components are involved in the charging circuit? My dad
has a 3500 that won't charge either, the charge LED is always lit solid
regardless of whether batteries are installed or not. I got a parts laptop
to try and fix the problem, but I don't know what to swap over. The parts
machine won't boot, but it does charge batteries. I already tried swapping
in the little power module above the audio jacks, but with no change.
Right now he's just charging the batteries by putting them in the parts
laptop, but this is obviously not quite as good as being able to charge them
while working from AC on the good machine.

its been a long while, i cant remember off hand.

I do know that the components responsible are between the two drive bays,
towards the top, not directly in the middle of the two, but just right north
of it. At the bottom of the main board, but at teh top of the two drive
bays. (one for battery, one for CD/floppy).
