Degaussing a TV

My son thought he would do the right thing and put an unshielded speaker on
top of the TV..........surround sound and all that.

I now have lots of purple faces. What is the best way to sort this out?

thanks,paul

Hi,

Wnen you turn TV on with main switch, it goes through degaussing
automatically. Try to do it few times.
If this does not help, you will need a degaussing wand.

See http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/tvfaq.htm

Look under CRT basics

Greetings.
You will probably need to turn the tv off with the mains switch,
then wait at least an hour (maybe longer) before switching
back on again.

The degaussing circuit needs time to cool before it will work.

While the tv is still in standby mode, the circuit is kept warm.

Russell.

Thanks guys,

I turned it off and left it overnight. All ok now.

But now I am wondering if there is a way to shield the TV from the speaker
without going to the expense of buying a dedicated centre speaker?

I think the only way to do that is to surround the speaker magnet
with lead.
That could be very difficult, but don't let that stop you.

Bye,
Russell Griffiths.

** What for - magnetism is not the same as X rays ???

That could be very difficult, but don't let that stop you.

** Forget the lead.

Since when has lead stopped magnetic fields??? Didn't in my days at tech...

Might stop Superman from seeing what's inside your speakers!! ;-)

Oddly, I had a TV that was turned off for a week (holidays), came back
and it needed the degauss.

Yes all you need to do is either
1. Remove the magnet(s) from the speaker
2. Demagnetise the magnets in the speaker

Dam, here was me thinking it was a simple as placing left handed
rhododendron monkey in the SW corner of celebrity in my laundry......

Does this mean I should buy a shielded speaker, rather than build a Faraday
cage made out of gold plated chicken wire for my speaker.....

Greetings.
Sorry for the mis-information.
I thought I had read lead was used in magnetically shielded
speakers.

Does anyone know how magnetically shielded speakers
are constructed?

Russell.

Yes. Faraday cages work for electric fields, but not magnetic ones.

Yes, silly me! So how do they make shielded speakers then?

Would a HALBACH orientated magnet array work in a speaker, I wonder...
