When you're talking about custom parts, this is the type of response you
should expect. Albeit perhaps without the excrement. Literally anyway...

Some time back, we were given an ultrasonic contact lens cleaner by our CEO
to fix. Determined the only chip in it was cooked.

Called NatSemi for a replacement explaining we couldn't find it in any of
their databooks, or perhaps a compatible unit instead.

They outright flatly refused to admit it was theirs.

Explained nicely it *HAD* to be theirs because it had *THEIR* logo on it.
(this is well before Chinese fakes appeared) They ask for the part number once
again, and buggered off to find it.

Come back some time later to say it was a custom part, and the licence
agreement meant they could only supply the part to the vendor who commissioned
it in the first place, and suggested we try them.
Explained that vendor went bust, and was bought out by someone else, who had
absolutely no interest other than selling whole boxes.

So, they suggested we buy an entire new box (would have been a fair cost at
the time).

So we suggested the CEO (did some name dropping) of company (more name
dropping) which dealt exclusively and heavily with other (drop more media and
news company name dropping) would be very disappointed to hear this.

"How many parts would you like, and to what address would you like them to
be sent?"

That's the only time that clout worked though. Only managed a "sod off"
response every other time. And that's when they were nice about it.

Nowadays, they don't even bother asking. They go directly to cloning the
boards, and reverse engineering everything else. I was asked to either
reverse engineer or re-write firmware for a box that was otherwise completely
and perfectly copied, just they couldn't get the code out. Aside from that,
they said it was ready to ship once this was done.

No shame at all...
