Data over CB radio

First of all I don't know much about CB Radio interfacing.

Is there a data channel for CB's. Lets say for a Motorola GM3xx series.

For example can I have 2 Motorolas sending data bits across from one PC to
another PC serial ports or what
ever interfacing method is done.

I know that there are radio modems and stuff like that. I want to know
specifically for Motorolas at CB radio range.

So when not talking over a channel openning a channel automatically to base
sending data and then closing the channel.

Rod, as far as the illegal side of it, are we talking CB as in AM CB, or CB
as in UHF CB(or is it the same for both)??

I thought the Electraphone TX4600(cant remember exactly) series UHF CB radio
units allow you to send commands across UHF channels to control pumps etc.
From what I saw, it was capable of multiple commands being sent &
acknowledged from the sets. I looked at a pair for controlling a solar
pump(5kms), but was put off by the cost\benefit. Approx $1000 each end, once
you installed radio, solar panel & battery, control relays, pressure sensors
& housing for the lot. At the time there were easier ways to solve it.
It will get cheaper as they get more common, I expect.

I didnt investigate how they interface the radio, but I doubt it was much
more than simple commands. I also didnt think to actually ask if the setup
was legal. I assumed it was.

I'm a complete novice when it comes to CB. But when I looked
into it recently, I found references to channels 22 and 23 now
being reserved for data. See http://www.acbro.org/ for further
details. But maybe I've misunderstood things (a little knowledge
being dangerous, and all that).

Same for both.

There are however other bands where data is legal without a license.

There's quite a few ways of doing it, including full
packet TNCs that basically allow full error correcting
protocols and anything you like commands wise.

Yeah, its legal as long as the correct bands
are used and the power levels are legal.

Model radio control is another example of something similar.

thats correct, Channels 22 & 23 on UHF CB are reserved for data only
