Is a crimping tool supposed to work on these things?

All of my attempts so far have splayed three of the four squashable sections
outwards instead of squeezing them inwards. (The exception is the bit thats already
folded.)
Using thin nosed pliers I can make a reasonable connection. Although even with that
method its sometimes difficult to get the triangular bits securely around the
plastic wire outer (or ideally digging into it).
I suspect Im using this rather expensive tool wrongly, so any practical advice
would be welcomed please.
