CRAZY PROBLEM WITH AUDIO JVC CA-C550

Hi Everybody,
This crazy thing happened,
A friend of mine, told me if I could get a look at his minicomponent
system, because the six CD changer was stuck. I'm a electronic
technician, so I said no problem, and opened the equipment, I
dissembled the front of the system, disconnected some cables, and then
reached one CD that was stuck in the mechanism. I then put everything
together, tried the CD , and it worked fine, till my friend asks me,
why did the display didn't worked. This is where the problem really
started for me, I carefully opened the equipment again, verified
everything, and found nothing wrong. There was a flat cable that
connected the front panel with the inside, I thought that maybe one
wire had been cut, so I checked it with my tester, but the cable was
fine.
I did some measurements on the displays pins and found that there was
a 28V in most of the pins. I tried to see if there was something that
was making shortcut, but nothing.
So, the resume is that the CD works ok, but there's no display, also
the radio that is in the same cabinet, doesn't seem to work too.
I don't have the service manual so, I don't know where to go.

THE EQUIPMENT IS A TWO CABINETS MINICOMPONENT SYSTEM.

If it worked before you took things apart, and is not now, probably there
has to be a connection that is not making contact, in a socket, or cold
soldered under a connector, or something like this. It would be a
coincidence, if something in the supply went defective, or maybe even
something in the display driver area, or the display itself. One thought,
is the display in this unit using a back light with an LCD panel in front of
it? If so, check the backlight. I have had these go defective in units.

You maybe did not stick the ribbon cable back in backwards did you?
As a stupid check, i always mark the socket and cable with a sharpie
prior to removal so there is no question on polarity.

Also, check for a screw that may have got lodged in a circuit somewhere.

Assuming it's a FL tube type display, they 28 volts you mentioned should
probably be -28.
Anyway, check that there exists about 3 volts or so across the two outside
pins of the display tube. This is the filament voltage and this voltage
could be missing for some reason. Could be AC or DC either one, but AC is
more likely.
Obviously you should inspect the solder connections at the display tube and
resolder if necessary.

If it's not an FL tube then obviously check for burned-out backlighting
lamp(s).

Be very careful when re-assembling pcb headers as they often don't have
any mechanical support and thus is extremely easy to crack a pcb or pull
a trace when inserting the cable.
