CPU Monitor Scratches

We have been given a monitor that works great but there are several light
scratches on the surface of the CRT. They are very minor and located
directly in the middle of the screen. Is there any way to "polish" these
out? Someone recommended using polishing compound on them but I was afraid
that would make them worse.

Thanks,

try a syrupy solution of water-glass ,sodium silicate ? washed into the
scratches and then later "polish" back surplus with a damp cloth.
Have a go with some scrap glass first to get the right process

I'm not sure there's a relevancy here - but I once
had a windshield wiper self destruct on a long, tired,
middle of nowhere trip home from camping.

Durned thing scratched the windshield right dead on
in my line of sight. (I know, my own fault :)

Got some of that pink liquid glass polishing compound,
worked like a dog and did get the scratches out.

Looked absolutely perfect.

Until I drove again - turns out that I had
also turned the windshield into a bit of a
lens. Just awful.

So, be cautious :)

Take care.

Also might want to try the polish solution used in fiberglass hot tubs. I
used it on my wiper damaged windscreen in my Rover. Worked great, filled the
scratches to perfectly clear. to be more off topic try an optomotrist. They
have some neat eyeglass repair solutions you just use a Q-tip to apply. I
would think they would work well

You can get any of the fine polishes for glass. But, with a monitor there
are several layers of anti-glare coatings on these. You will find that where
you polished there will no longer be any anti-glare. This will have a weird
effect visually. Also, when polishing, you may make it have a bit of a lens
effect where you polished. Also, you can look in to the windshield repair
kits. There are a number of methods that they use, but they are not
optically perfect.

When polishing glass, you will have to work at it for a very long time if
you are doing this by hand. If you use a high speed polishing tool, take
care for the heating of the surface.

Take care that if there is a deep scratch in the glass, there is the chance
for a crack, and then surface destruction. When glass is scratched, this
creates a break point. The front glass on a CRT is very thick, but the
surface is not indestructible.

There is a liquid acrylic floor wax sold under the name FUTURE. It
may be worth a try to apply a coat of this to even out the scratch
marks. I anticipate the optical effect will be like wetting a scrtach
on a plate glass. The scratch is still visible but it won't be so
obvious. If it doesn't work the coating is easy to remove with
alcohol.

I should have said water-glass is also dissolvable away with excess water if
it doesn't work because of plastic film coating or whatever
