Connecting two computers with modems

I am doing a little science fair project and I need to connect two
computers together using two dial-up modems, two phones (mic. to spkr.
and spkr. to mic.), using no phone line, just plain old phone cable. I
have powered the cables with 9V batteries and can use the phones as
intercoms, but can I use them to establish a dial-up connection
between two PCs? The reason I am doing this crazy set up is because I
plan to hook the mic's and spkr's up to ultrasonic sound converting
circuits and have the communication be done over air via ultrasonic
sound.

Using your batteries and phone cables, use a modem program such as
HyperTerminal
to control the hardware. Set one modem to use originate tones and take it
off hook by
sending it an ATH1 command. Send the other to use answer tones and take it
off hook.

Get a copy of the Hayes AT commands that nearly every modem uses so you will
know
what else you can do.

Run a telephone cable between the two modems. Open terminal
programs in each computer. In Computer A, send the modem ATX3D.
In Computer B. send the modem ATA. You probably could echo these
commands to the com port just by using a batch file.
