computer monitor, board no good

Someone tell me if this old computer monitor is of any use to me
anymore. The circuit board has a blown cap and resistor, probably
indicating a bigger problem that I am not qualified to diagnose
but.... after disassembling it and removing the CRT from the board I
thought it might be cool to make the CRT into maybe a oscilliscope
type of thing that tracks the mp3s I play. Any suggestions on this?
Can the CRT be controlled without the board it came with??

As long as the hv and sweep currents are within specs and the crt is mounted
securely. Actually you could theoretically use the crt in a tele if you
wanted to.

NO. If anything on the main born is blown up, it is of no use. Recycle it.
Used monitors are too cheap to bother fixing.

Heck, you can't even give them away when they work. Goodwill and
Salvation Army both refused a 17" monitor with the manual. I suppose I
could set it on the curb and hope it gets taken.
