Computer CD reader noisy

I have been given an elderly Pentium I that has a Creative Quad Speed CD
reader, that apparently works perfectly well, but makes an awful noise
when the tray moves in and out. It sounds like a drive gear which is not
meshing fully with a rack gear (?). I've never seen the insides of a CD
reader. Is this an easy fix? Maybe it just needs some grease.

You may have to live with it.

Not all drives are designed equally. Some drives have very quiet mechanisms
(newer Samsungs, Lite-on, Hitachi) while others are quite noisy (NEC).

The noise problem should only be a concern if you hear any hard snapping (if it
sounds like something is breaking), hard squeaking, or hard cracking noises
during the mechanical operation.

Otherwise, it's more or less a nuisance but not really a problem. - Reinhart

You are best to leave it alone if it works okay. Some of the older drive
trays were noisy. I have one on an old PI myself. If you want a really
good drive, for a few dollars you can put in a more modern drive. They take
only a few minutes to swap. Windows will see the new drive right away.
