computer and energy use

Does it really consume less energy to leave the computer on the whole
day than to repeatedly turn it off and on (maybe 3-4 times)?

Sometimes I do overnight downloads. Any idea how costly that would
be? The monitor shuts off after a few minutes of inactivity.

Heh. I accidentally set one for just that, and it kind of scared the pants
off of me when this idle computer suddenly sprang to life on its own. ;-)

Your computer is on a switch mode power supply (I;m assuming it isn't a
laptop), to get that started takes fair amount of power, but once up
consumption is basedd on consumption of your motherboard/peripherals.

While your download is in progress it will be consuming, but when finished
your cpu and drives can go into idle mode. Consumption at that point is
tiny.

Coming out of sleep mode is not as great a surge as a full power up, because
your switch mode psu is already up.
