I've taken to watching the US TV series "Criminal Minds". In it, they always
refer to the bad guy that they're looking for as "the unsub".

What is an 'unsub' ? Two truncated words welded together ? An acronym ?
Someone please tell. It's doing my crust in ... >:-\

<grin> I've got several amusing (wrong) answers that I
was tempted to drag out and present as factual.... :>
But, the answer you are looking for is "UNknown SUBject".

I.e., whoever-the-hell-did-it-that-we-don't-yet-know

Now, get back to work and stop rotting your brain!! :>

OK, thanks all ! I kinda thought it might be "unknown subject", but I must
admit, I never even considered Googlin' it, which is odd for me, coz
usually, I'm a demon for looking stuff up on there. Still, it is Christmas,
and I blame the large intakes of food and booze ;~)

Your turn now:

Yep ! Cockney rhyming slang. "crust of bread" = "head"

Think Small Faces and "Lazy Sunday Afternoon" which has the lines :

They stop me from groovin',
They bang on me wall,
They're doin' me crust in,
It's no good at all

Ohhhh, Lazy Sunday afternoon
I've go no mind to worry etc etc

If you like Criminal Minds, if you get the opportunity check out "The
Inside" a Fox (US) show that predated "Minds" but only lasted about 7 or 8
episodes before it was rudely cancelled. Not on DVD as yet, but I have some
episodes here.

Sometimes those things end up on hulu.com.

There was another that preceded these;
it actually used the requested term as a title:

I remember it because
the investigators wore bunny suits at crime scenes.

but only lasted about 7 or 8 episodes

Rupert is very trigger-happy about cancellations.

....though NBC wasn't much more tolerant:

I remember "Unsub". I thought it had lots of potential. It may have been the
first of the "profiler" trend.

It was too smart for Americans--even Americans of 1989.

It may have been the first of the "profiler" trend.

There was also a Hannibal Lecter movie with the CSI guy
years before the fava-beans version:

Again, too smart for the room.
