Hi,
I have a Telecom Commander BN series phone system which I am trying to
install,
but I am not sure how to connect it up.
Does anybody know how to do it, or have any suggestions where to look for
information on it?

Here are some photos of the main unit, it is marked S338/879 and
TS-BN308512.

The phones are 3 x S338/865, TS-BN308-OH and 1 x TS-BN308-HS, each of which
has a single RJ11 modular connector on the back.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

Hi there David, good luck with this, I had an S series Commander system, and
what a pain in the butt that was. I even had the manual and it didn't help
much, about the only help I can give you is the commander use four wires for
connecting the handsets to the base station from memory, but where the
connect in your particular setup I have no idea
Cheers
Tony..

I have a BN308/512 and it's essentially identical 'big brother' the BN824.
I have the BN824 installed in my house and it works very well.
I have the manuals for them. This is nothing like the S series
(fortunately)
and you should have no trouble with the right docs figuring it all out.
I had never touched one when I came across mine and I had it up and working
in an afternnoon in test layout and hooked up and working on my phone line
next day.
In a nutshell, you need to program it from the first extension (10) using a
LCD display
phone or a special programming gizmo. I used the phone.
One of your HF (display) phones will need to be wired to Extn 10
so you have a programming phone. Programming options are in binary (1 or 0)
so it's a bit
tedious but not terribly difficult. Some stuff can be left at the defaults.
Depending on how it was programmed previously, you might get away with using
it as is,
but it can be awkward if some extensions are STD blocked etc...
The 308/512 is a 3 exchange line 8 extension PABX with an expansion board
that will
handle another 2 exchange lines and 4 extensions (2 wire, common or garden
phones).
That gives a total of 5 Exchange lines and 12 extensions.
Wiring is pretty straight forward, but you *will* need a Krone tool. I'll
scan the krone block layout
diagram and the wiring of the handsets for you if you like.
The Commander handsets are 4 wire and if you get it wrong you will get some
very strange effects in
some combinations instead of just not working...

Give me a couple days to do it....
I've also done some scaled .bmp templates for the index cards on the phones
so you can type
in names and numbers and print the whole thing instead of handwriting them.
I'll give you these
as well....

I really need to get around to scanning the entire manual set i think.
These are very good PABX
units actually, with quite a few features, though they are a little dated
now, but *very* reliable
and they seem to be turning up at auctions cheap enough to make home
installation affordable.
Has some nice tricks like inbuilt music on hold (ok, it's music box stuff
but it's there) or you can
feed in a radio or sound system instead. Full hands free from the LCD
display phones and partial
handsfree from the non display phones. You can make a PA announcement to
all extension by dialling
ICM 80, so it's a very home PABX. The onboard clock is pretty good too,
mine had sat in a shed
disconnected for over a year when I rescued them from being dumpstered and
the clocks were less
than a minute out when I reconnected the power and still retained their
programming. Not bad..
The 512 expansion will only allow decadic dialling on the extra extension it
provides, it was possible
to make it do tone but it requires a daughter board add in that is
apparently made from Unobtainium.
I've even had it set up to allow a 56k modem to dial out using one of the 2
wire extensions, bit slow
on the uptake since it could only dial decadic, but it worked ok and make it
possible to stop someone
disconnecting me from the net by picking up the phone......
My 308/512 is actually installed in a comms caravan for a cadet unit as a
field telephone system since it
will run off 48vdc from a battery bank with an auto changeover to mains with
a very minor mod (basically
just added a relay between the PABX and its PSU.)

Once you get it wired up drop me a line and I'll send you a copy of the
programming sheet so you can
set it up how you like.

A tip for you, get the modem to dial "0" in decadic, insert a pause,
then change to VF tone for the rest of your number. The pause is
necessary to ensure it picks up outside dialtone.

Yes, I thought about that, but hadn't managed to get it to work. If you've
done it
then obviously I was using the wrong technique. We've gone ADSL so it's
somewhat
academic now.
I'd still like to find the tone dial daughter boards for these, but they are
incredibly rare for some reason.

Thanks

All of the dialling is done from the modem, you would have to read the
documentation relevant to your modem model to do this. Once you have
dialled "0" to get out of the BN, everything is irrelevant once you have
dialtone from your carrier.

The DTMF daughter boards are rare because much equipment esp. cordless
phones used decadic only at that time. Exactly the opposite is true now.
Virtually every new phone now is incapable of dialling decadic. Today,
you would pay a premium for one with a switch - Like you would really
want too :)

Also they were an additional cost if I remember correctly.
