Color fault on SONY TV - suggestions?

Hi all,

Have a SONY Trinitron TV, KV-125S28 which has developed a color fault.

I have put a quick pic up at: http://kenchandler.com/sony/itwasasony.jpg
(~76KB)

If showing a standard 'no-signal' screen, instead of the usual darkish blue
the display is green with a light-blue/cyan circle in the centre which
gradually blends into the green.

We lost power at home today while we where out (lots of 12 o'clock
flashers). Maybe power came back with a spike, or fluctuated before the
outage causing the Teev to die? The TV was okay last night.

Any hints/tips or otherwise greatly appreciated. Recommendations for
reliable repairers in Sydney (Parra/Ryde, other areas okay.) gratefully
accepted.

It may well only need a degauss or three to fix it up, which I'm sure is
built into the TV. You need to completely de-power it for a while, then
switch it on. There should be a deep thump as the degauss circuit activates.
If it doesn't fix the problem completely, repeat.

you have had a magnet, eg speaker too close to it..
If turning it off at the POWER POINT does not work, you will need to get hold of a
degaussing wand from your favourite TV repair shop, takes about 10 seconds to fix it....

turn it off, unplug, in about an hour, turn it back on,
Unplugged it last night before bed, plugged in this a.m. heard the degauss
kick-in on replug - works a treat. Thanks a bunch Matt.

I am familiar with degauss on my PC screen, never see a monitor go like the
Teev went though.

The TV has been in essentially the same spot for 3+years, no new magnetic
sources in at least 2 of those. Any clues what might have happened so
suddenly out of curioustity?

Thanks again, much appreciated.

Thanks a bunch for your reply. I tried Matts reply and it worked a treat,
thanks for explaining what was going on, much appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Allan, all fixed.

No new magentic infulences in at least 2 years that I can think of, same TV,
Stereo, speakers etc etc. Problem is gone, mystery continues.

Thanks again.

Hi Ken,

I think the cause of the problem was a very close lightening strike.

As you can understand, lightening is a very high voltage at very high
current levels for a very short period of time. A lightening strike close by
will generate a huge magnetic field, which of course magnetizes the picture
tube. In several cases I have seen the tube has been so heavily magnetized
that the internal degauss circuit is unable to correct the problem and it
requires use of a manual degaussing wand to correct the fault.

Hope this helps!

* The de-gauss coil can in fact very easily heavily *magnetise* the tube.

All that is needed is that it receive a short burst of power - maybe
only one or two AC cycles. This might happen due to a storm, a loose fitting
AC plug or just blowing the internal AC fuse at switch on.

Normally, the PTC thermistor makes the 50 Hz current flowing in the
coil decay to a very low value over a few seconds which produces the wanted
*demagnetising* effect.

Hi James,

Thanks for the suggestions. There were no lightning or storms nearby that I
know of though we did have a power outage as I mentioned in my OP. Sounds
like Phil might've hit the nail on the head in his post, fits the
circumstances anyhoo.
