color bleeding?

Hi,

I just bought a Sony KV-21CL10 TV. I'm not sure I understand exactly what
color bleeding is, but I think my TV has it big. The problem is showing when
there is a white area on the screen, expecially on the upper left corner. At
the top edge of the white object, there are little vertical red lines going
from the edge upwards. This can be best observed when I turn the tv into
16:9 mode (its normal dimensions are 4:3), with black bars at the top and
bottom. Then I can see the red component from the image area crossing a bit
into the black area. Also, the same thing happens with the blue color, going
downwards on the right bottom area of the screen. Can anyone read tell me
what exactly is the term for this behaviour, how normal it is and what are
some causes and solutions?

Thank you in advance.

This sounds like misconvergence, according to how I am understanding your
description.

There is a tolerance for this type of error. It is not easily adjustable.
Sometimes it can be improved by someone who is skilled at this type of work.
The corner convergence is usually done with slip or edge magnets that are
made for this application. A grating test pattern is used in part of the
procedure.

For most consumer TV sets the tolerance is about 2 to 3 mm (1/16 to 3/32
inch) at the extreme corners on a 3:4 screen. It would be a bit more on a
16:9 screen. The manufactures do not normally publish convergence
specifications for their consumer TV sets, unless it is a very high end
model. This allows them to have errors without explanation. In the
professional TV equipment lines, the convergence specifications are
published, and are used as part of the performance guide line.

If your set is under warranty, you can call their service rep to come and
check this out for you. Since they see many of your model, their tech should
be able to tell you if it is in the normal range that he sees. If it is out
of warranty, they will charge you for the service call.

That is normal convergence error on a diret view tv set in the
corners.
Depending on how far off it is, it might be or might not be outside of
the specifications for that model.

A couple of mm variance in the corners on a direct view of that size
is normal for the red or blue to be off the green.

The tolerance between that specific tv set and another one off the
line can be great, yours may just be at the edge of tolerance. Call
for a warranty check up of the issue.

Stand back, squint, and see if it doesn't look like the Virgin Mary.
You just might have yourself a shrine, there. No, seriously, make
sure you don't have a speaker too close. I once brought back a
TV with a screwed-up picture. It didn't do it at the store. It was
my huge speakers. They weren't even that close, and the old TV
was fine with them.
