Coaxial to 5.1

HI,
Does anyone know where I might get an adaptor that will decode the coaxial
audio output of my new DVD to the separate 5.1 Audio inputs to suit my Sony
Amp.

I don't want to get rid of my amp just because the new DVD I bought has not
got 5.1 output on it.

Has anyone seen them?
Is there a kit version?

Take the DVD back and exchange it for one that suits your needs.

Its a DVD and VHS combo,
I couldn't find any, and as I also wanted DVD to VHS copy, it left me with
even less options..

you just need a standalone 5.1 decoder, such beasts exist and are cheap,
doesn't look like sony produce them.

could go for a base model receiver with inbuilt 5.1 decoder and optical &
coaxial inputs for around $500, IE the sony STRDE495, this requires an
amplified subwoofer however.

But you really want the STRDA5000ES 170W each channel x 7 @ $2091+gst :))

You need to buy a separate decoder. They aren't that common and used to be
quite expensive - don't know about now.

You are probably better off getting a new receiver that does Dolby Digital
and DTS.

Also, to get the most out of Digital TV, you will need a Dolby Digital
decoder anyway.

Give jaycar a call - they stock odd stuff like this.

Thanks Gary, no they don't.
The problem is as discussed it needs to have the Dolby Decoder IC in it, so
the cost is $$,
I am thinking maybe track down a cheap , low power amp and rip the DTS/Dolby
section out and install it into my Sony receiver..

Quite a while back (must have been '99, when I was still living in Melb.)
there was a crowd advertising in The Age Green Guide who sold these
adapters - maybe give that a squiz.

On the Dick Smith web site you can find a Voxson decoder
with the speakers for under $300, or do I not understand the need here.
I had my sights on it for one day in the future, having not bought a
sufficiently cheap DVD player with 5.1 sound.
