Just wondering what is the best type of Alcohol to clean a PCB with
components on it?

And any tips on the cleaning procedure.

It is a mobile phone board with a bit of Corrosion on it.

Thanks.

Alcohol isnt much use for corrosion.

Do you know what caused the corrosion ?

** The last mobile phone I saw had been in a woman's handbag - along with
a tub of yogurt that leaked. Of course, she made no attempt to clean it or
thought to remove the battery and it was weeks before she gave it to me.

It was ruined by the resulting corrosion.

A lacquer coating over the solder pads and ICs on the PCB would pretty
much prevent this.

If the corrosion is only on the copper side, Ajax sometimes works well.
Be sure to flush off the Ajax and then dry the board with a hair drier.

Don't know, but probably just water. It was a 2nd hand phone, so it has been
there for a while.

It seems some of it maybe under one of the BGA chips, so an alcohol bath
maybe enough to loosen it up.

I have removed all visible signs of the corrosion.

** Top posting is bad manners !!!

Don't know, but probably just water.
** Was it left out in the rain ?

Dropped in the dunny ?

Fell in a chlorinated pool ?

Chances are not high that phone will ever work again if the water was not
perfectly clean. The combination of a dirty or conductive liquid and the DC
power from the battery eats fine PCB tracks in seconds.

Looks like it was just some rain or something. The phone Does boot and
displays the 'Contact service message'.

What I would really like to know, is the type of Alcohol to use.

** 1. Stop fucking top posting.

2. Alcohol is not a corrosion remover - it is only a solvent.

Hello Steven,
I rescued some HF and VHF radio equipment that had been
dunked in salt water for a short time. The gear was given a
bath with lots of fresh running water then the boards were
removed so that a water hose could be applied to both
sides of the boards. The equipment was sprayed many
times with WD40, I used a toothbrush, tissues and rags.
A small portable TV set which also suffered from the
dunking was given the same treatment and worked when
reassembled. It was still working 12 months later.
With a mobile phone, working at much higher frequencies
and with tiny parts you might not be as lucky as I was but
you have nothing to loose and everything to gain.
Maybe you could wash the WD40 off with something
else later if the WD40 was causing some detuning effect.
With the equipment I cleaned up, I left a light coating
of WD40 on the gear.

Thanks. It's nice to get a straight answer.

The RF Section doesn't seem to be effected, so maybe I'll just stay away
from there.

Will give water a try. Thanks.

** What ??????

There was no answer at all to your idiot "which alcohol ?" question.

The scenario John described was completely different to the one in your
question.

Like I said, alcohol isnt any real use for corrosion.

Isopropyl alcohol, but it will not dissolve the corrosion. You will need to
scrub with a brush or cotton bud.

Actually most people post inserts *throughout* the original post.

There was a vote, which state?

WA for one - although we usually count for only a tad more than Tasmania, and
they often get missed on the map ....

And often an indication of a liar and a Charlatan.

I wondered why some people Posted at the bottom,

It all depends on what you wish to achieve Bottom posting is useful because
it helps keep your Reply in context that is someone else can see which part
of a previous post you are responding to ( as in this case I am responding
to the bit you wrote above)

SO lets all start a new fad, POST ON TOP..!!
It might sound like a good idea but Top posting is often what liars and
charlatans (scum like w_tom) resort to so that they can misquote people
