hi,

a mate of mine wants to build up a circuit to test the conductivity of
water

in amps or volts etc, i dont have all the details, but i think you know
what i mean

However it might be more useful if measured in units of conductivity
(Siemens, milliSiemens or - most likely - microSiemens).

i forgot to mention that he is actually looking for a circuit
so thats why i asked

and yes siemens i think he was talking about

so yes if anyone has any useful circuits or places to look, then the
info would be appreciated

what about mhos, the reciprocal of ohms? Measure in ohms and take its
reciprocal.

It is not that easy to do.
Polarisation at the electrodes is one problem.
If you use ac to overcome the polarisation, then the high dielectric
constant of the water introduces capacitance effects.
Any salts in the water cause corrosion of metal electrodes as well.

You can make one with two metal plates of known area and spaced a known
distance apart. then the results that you get from measuring the resitance
between them can be used to calculate the conductivity. BUT. the electrodes
will only last for a short time before they change their surface
conductivity. And the other effects start to occur.

So, overall, it would be easier to purchase one.
