Doesn't seem all that surprising to me given the very specific
application. The ship makes short trips between power plants,
which themselves generate power much more efficiently than
what would be practical to put on a ship. The cost of buying
and accommodating batteries has obviously become low enough
that they can take advantage of that.

Panel Arrays to supplement/re-charge the batteries during the day??
