In the US the virus probably will persist for year, granting the ineptitude of the attempts to contain it, and there will be equally inept attempts to restore the economy (which wouldn't have needed much restoration if the US had moved to quarantine, lock-down and effective contract tracing faster and more effectively).
It will be remembered as a murderous farce, with the Trump role played for all of it's black comedy potential.
Whoever takes it on will have the same kind of advantage that Tina Fey had when she satirised Sarah Palin, by repeating what the woman had actually said, if with better comic timing.
