1 uSv/hr for a few hours is about one banana's worth (~2.3 uSv), and the
potassium-40 from the banana is _inside_ your body.

Back in the 1970s, my father worked for Cominco, a large Canadian
producer of nonferrous metals. They had a mercury mine on Pinchi Creek,
near Pinchi Lake. The government environmentalists were all over them
because the mercury concentration in Pinchi Lake (downstream from the
mine) was way above the specified limit.

Then they tested _upstream_ from the mine, and found _more_ mercury in
the water there. The mine effluent was cleaner than the feed water (and
well within the legal limits.) The lake had been full of mercury for
centuries, and the local Indians ate fish from it all the time. When
your water is sitting on top of a large, shallow mercury deposit, that
sort of thing happens.

The salt subistute (potassium cloride) is often radio active, and people
eat that.

hmm, yeah other places agree, I wonder how I got that idea, I had the
impression that 39 and 41 were just much less radioactive.

radio, it would be radio active, because when it's playing, it's active.

I sort of figure the "RAD" has to do with radiation, but why did the

It derives from the latin 'radiare': 'to shine'. 'Radio' is the
first person present tense: "I shine".
