CD Won't Play

First posting here so hello, everybody.

I have a Technics CD/DVD system which has been fine ever since bought it
just over a year ago. Recently I bought The Stones' Satanic Majesties
Request (among others) and took it home in great anticipation having not
heard it for about twenty years.

Put the CD in the tray and pressed play/ Okay, it sounds as though it's
spinning and the display comes up "READ", but nothing happens and after
about a minute I get "NO PLAY". Now the odd thing is, I took the CD back to
the shop and the replacement does the same. Something wrong with the player?
Well, as I have an extended warranty I got it looked at and they found the
laser was faulty so that's been replaced. But it STILL happens. Yet the disc
plays on the car player and on my PC. None of my other CDs has this problem
and I'm now at a loss. Can anyone suggest my next move - apart from going
back to the shop and getting them to test it which I'm going to do next time
I get the chance. Just wondering if anyone's had a similar experience and
what was the outcome.

Is there anything unusual about the disc visibly or is it extra length?

There are variations in reflectivity/contrast/whatever from different
CD makers that sometimes result in a player rejecting a disc.

Doesn't seem to be any different to any of the others. It's only the length
of a vinyl LP because it has the same number of tracks as the original. Very

I have discovered that it's an SACD and that, despite assurances on the
case, my Technics system will not play them - and that straight from
Panasonic's Customer Service Line at Bracknell. Fat lot of bloody use that
is! Perhaps I should phone Virgin and MVC and let them know, then charge
them a Ł100 per hour consultation fee.

Many DVD players will play SACD these days.

For SACD, support is iffy.

If you consider models from certain manufacturers, like Pioneer or Onkyo,
chances are you will be able to find a model from either manufacturer that will
play both DVD-A and SACD.

If you consider a Sony, you will only find models that can play SACD in
addition to DVDs. If you consider a Panasonic, you will only find models that
can play DVD-A in addition to DVDs. - Reinhart

Take it back to the shop and demand a refund under the Sale of Goods Act.

If enough people do this then the Powers-That-Be will get the message .

Yes, I did that. The spotty fourteen year old behind the counter said "Yeah,
okay" and gave me my money back. As far as I know there was no contact with
management about it but I am writing to Virgin, HMV, MVC and others to make
them aware of this (although it's fairly astounding that they aren't
already). While I'm at it I'm going to let Sony and Panasonic aware of my
thoughts which I'm sure they'll be delighted to receive.
