CD-ROM drive makes noise

Hello people.

I have an old CD-ROM drive (LiteON 24x) which, today, decided to start making a
noise like something is "vibrating" on its inside. The CD runs correctly however.

I can get a new drive but I'd like to try to repair this one.
What piece can be loose and causing the problem?

Thanks.

Most of the time, this is a lead to mechanical failure. It may be the
bearings on the motor. You can take the drive apart, and connect it up, to
listen to where the noise is coming from. you can try a drop of oil in the
motor shaft, if it is accessible. As for buying parts, there is no support
for these. The cost of the parts, because of distribution costs, would be
greater than a complete new drive.

I remember about 20 years ago floppy drives were more than several hundred
dollars each. In those days, they sold parts to service them, and there were
places doing drive service, and alignments. Now that a floppy drive can be
around $20 average, and a CD writer can be about $50 or so, there is no way
anyone can afford a skilled technician to service these.

Its typical of the 24X Variable Speed drives. they are noisy.
Sometimes its just the snap on faceplate which is vibrating,
push on it next time it makes the noise, it will probably go away.

I will take a look at this, when I have some free time.

I know that a drive can be obtained for cheap, but I am a hobbyst and I'd like to
attempt to do this repair _if it does not involve any new parts_. Train my skills,
you know.

At least it would give a free CD Drive for my Linux box.

Thanks!
