Casablanca Light/Fan Controller

I have several Casablanca ceiling fans that all develop the same problem
with age. These units work by sending pulses from a wall switch circuit
through normal house wiring to a circuit board in the fan housing. This
board controls the light level and fan speed. After a few years the fan
controller still works but the light dimmer circuit malfunctions. If the
light is on for a few minutes it will turn off and when it cools, turn back
on again and so on. It seems like a thermal thing.

It seems like a component has drifted (maybe a cap). Any ideas on what to
replace? I'm tired of buying new circuit boards.

I don't have a schematic. Any ideas?

If the fan and dimmer light utilize the same radio receiver, then
you're probably right that its a thermal safety circuit that is
cutting off the light. Try using a very low wattage bulb to verify it
is a heating problem. Maybe a replacement triac would help.

I take it you have an intellitouch. Essentially, the fan and light switches put
a diode
in series with the A/C line to the fan. (the old one did anyway)
Different polarity on the diode between the fan and light switch. The switches
do wear out. hey are hard to find. It probably easier to buy a new wall switch
when this happens.
You have to have the new style wall switch if you replace the controller
circuit board.

If you have an older unit, there is a upgraded controller board for the fan.
I have one older one that the fan never totally turns off. It just kind of
putts along
at super slow speed. WHen i checked the triacs on the board, they were Tecor
or such with house numbers you could not cross. I assume they were std triacs,
but have never confirmed that fact. I would solder up the boards around the
triacs
before i replaced the board. The micro controller is a custom job you could
probably
never cross.

There are number of on line fans parts suppliers. But the intellitouch stuff is

costly.
