Carbon monoxide detector theory

My son is doing a project on carbon monoxide detectors and part of the
presentation entails how they work and the theory behind them. From
my understanding the electronic type use a solid state sensor while
the battery operated uses a passive sensor that reacts to prolonged
exposure to CO. Any information you can give would be much
appreciated. Thank you,

Lenny

I did a fast check of a few sites. These have some information. The CO2
measuring device is fairly complex, but you can start by doing some
searching and reading.

There are 2 main types of sensors that i see on a regular basis, solid state
sensors and electrochemical. The solid state sensor i see most often
(almost exclusivly) is the tgs-822 by figaro. For electrochemical sensors
check out http://www.citytech.com/ and click on Technology > Electrochemical
sensors: toxic sensors.

keep in mind all i ever see are commercail units, home units may use different(cheaper)
systems to detect CO
