i have a pioneer cd player (dexp88r) with an issue

the screen is not lighting up, but when you shine a torch on it (or
the sun shines on it) the screen is all still working, just not lit
up, how does an lcd screen work, is it a light(?) behind the screen or
would my problems be elsewhere?

The back light behind the display is burned out, and requires replacement.
If you unassembled the display, you can identify the lamp, and contact the
Pioneer parts department, or research the lamp yourself to obtain a new
replacement. Take care when unassembling your radio and display. It is
easy to do some damage that will be more costly to service.
