I'm guessing that it's not new. either!

What I'm looking for is a half dozen to a dozen of the 5K ten-turn pots
like the Bourns 3540S-1-502, or the Clarostat or Spectrol or whatever
equivalent. I got another HP 6214 power supply from Ebay, and it's
supposed to be guaranteed to work okay. Well, the previous owner
replaced the 3-turn voltage adjust pot with a ten-turn, and it's better,
I think. But the knob got banged up against something, and it takes a
firm grip to turn the knob, so I tried oiling it to see if that would
help, but I think it's not going to get any easier.

So I figured I'd look around for some replacements. I want to convert a
couple other HP PSes also, so I might as well buy a half dozen or so.
Both the voltage adjust and current adjust pots are 5k, so I could use
the ten-turn in both places. I got on Bourns website and found the
3540S-1-502, but the actual pot is marked 3540S-502-502 on the back.
The 3-turn current adjust pot is marked 3543-001-502 on the back, and
I'm guessing that the original voltage adjust pot was the same as this
one.

I tried searching Mouser and Digi-key, didn't find any Bourns pot of
that number on there. So I did a google search and found the above
surplus place that has some other similar pots. One is only a half inch
diameter, also ten-turn. I can get the real Bourns pot at Fry's for
$20, or a NTE spectrol for $12, so I'm shooting for a price of ten for a
hundred bucks if I can get them.

Okay, I just found a thread from some hams talking about their ELecraft
rig and one ham gave a Mouser part number. So I looked it up in the
Mouser catalog .PDFs and I found the 3540 Bourns series. They want
$12.71 each for five of the 3540 series, and I save 49 cents each by
buying ten.
http://www.mouser.com/catalog/616/398.pdf
But what I can't understand is that the 3543 series on the same page are
twice the price for 1/3 the turns!! $22 each! Now that's weird!

Here's the URL of the list of pots at this surplus place
http://www.surplussales.com/Potentiometers/RWVlist.html

Wow, the google search even turned up an Ebay listing for some pots. So
I searched there, and found this "SMALL SIZE GREEN THINGAMAJIG QTY-4000"
at
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2595535309&category=5
8164
What would you expect that to be? I looked closely at the picture, and
it's marked 103, but it could be something other than a ceramic cap. It
might be a 10k thermistor.

I'm still searching for an inexpensive source. Thanks for any advice..

Well, I found that there is an online elec store that sells the
equivalent of the Bourns 3590 series for $6.75 apiece. When I look at
the specs of both the 3540 and 3590 series, I see very similar specs,
but the 3590 is a few dollars cheaper at Mouser. See URL
http://www.bourns.com/2/comp_3.html The only diff I see is that the
3590 can't be ganged, which is not a consideration for my needs. The
3590 is also available with metal bushing and shaft, like the 3540.
Does anyone have any experience with these to be able to put a finger on
the difference?
