normally 5 thos means 5 thousand of an inches??

Don't know about Protel, but Pulsonix PCB can read in Gerber files. They
may subsequently be edited.

Why would you want to 'use' gerber files in Protel ?
If they are yours you must have the cad file that produced the gerbers so
just use to that to generate some new photoplots.

If you want to fiddle with the gerbers for some special reason use one of
the several gerber viewer/handlers commonly available - (or ask your pcb
manufacturer to do the fiddling for you - they are sure to have the tools
for the job).

Sometimes you want to change cad packages and be able to do corrections
on old artwork while moving them to the new package. Gerber in on Protel
would be nice to have but I haven't figured a way to do it.

Jim,
Protel doesn't support the full Gerber standard for imports (nor
exports), this is probably your problem. I believe that somewhere in the
Altium technical knowledge base you will find the details on successfully
converting most Gerber into a format compatible with Protel. It is an issue
of Protel only supporting a subset of the full Gerber standard, thus they
will not import some Gerber or sometimes just some problematic statements.
They will import what they export but not necessarily what some other
program has generated in Gerber.
Of course if you are dealing with separate aperture files (non 274X
Gerber format), you must also get the apertures imported correctly before
loading the actual Gerber layer files.
