California's brilliant governor

Guest
At Thursday’s press conference, Newsom said, “We believe the virus
will impact about 56% of California’s population ... You do the math,
that’s a particularly large number ... We believe with a 20%
hospitalization rate, that’s about 19,543 people that would need to be
hospitalized – above the existing capacity of our system.”

Hmmm. How many hospital beds does California have?

I've met Gavin. World-class airhead.

He has officially shut down the entire state. This can't end well.

He's a whole lot better than the idiot Sen. Ron Johnson from Wisconsin who said,

“I’m not denying what a nasty disease COVID-19 can be, and how it’s obviously devastating to somewhere between 1 and 3.4% of the population, but that means 97 to 99% will get through this and develop immunities and will be able to move beyond this, but we don’t shut down our economy because tens of thousands of people die on the highways. It’s a risk we accept so we can move about. We don’t shut down our economies because tens of thousands of people die from the common flu..”

Clearly he can't do math either. Even 1% of the state's population is 60,000 people. The numbers he is comparing that to are for the entire nation, about 50 times more people.

People who say things like this should be given available protective clothing and assigned to work at the triage desk in a hospital. Then we'll see how eager they are to weather the storm.

This is typical. A Governor munges the numbers that when done correctly show just how serious the situation is and the discussion is about the munging, but not the imminent catastrophe the Governor is talking about???

"In 2018, there were 7,274 ICU beds licensed in California". Now tell me what is important about the numbers the Governor gave.

That's as common as mixing kW with kWh or A and As. If that's 19,543
people *per day*, then it would match fast spreading in 40M and 20% rate.

If somebody has done PDEs in LTSpice, it would be more OT to create and
post a schematic for the commonly used SEIR infection spread model!

This house is pretty earthquake hardened, and 365 feet above sea
level. I grew up in hurricane country, a much bigger killer than
earthquakes.

Good thing the wind is blowing towards the east.

Travel industry sold all these people on buying some happiness with these cruises.

Something else they're not telling people is that victims with weak immune systems, like the Germ Princess crowd, actually shed a more virulent form of the virus. Incompetent and weak immune systems are like a tutorial for the virus to learn how to best navigate the host, defeat weakling antibodies, and optimize their replication.

Actually they don't. The virus genome doesn't seem to have changed significantly since the epidemic got underway

>Incompetent and weak immune systems are like a tutorial for the virus to learn how to best navigate the host, defeat weakling antibodies, and optimize their replication.

Which they can only do by changing their genome, which happens by random mutation - nothing the immune system does directly affects the genome, and a weak immune system doesn't kill off enough viruses with dud genomes to select out some optimised version of the genome.

This is the kind of idiocy that I'd expect to see from John Larkin or Whoey Louie. You used to be able to do better than this.
