Does anybody know of an inexpensive pdf to Gerber converter for making
pc boards?

I have some very good quality pdf files (converted from postscript
files) that I'd like gerber files from.

Thx!

Why not get artwork printed from the PDF files? Some PCB suppliers I know
can work from that, although they prefer Gerbers.

Maybe the author of gerber2pdf.py could give you some hints about
how to hack the program to go the other way.

My offhand guess is that the original postscript files are better.
Converting them to pdf did not enhance them. Also, retaining them in
postscript keeps Adobe out of the picture.

PDF files are made up of postscript, mostly. For vector-based stuff
converting postscript to PDF does not make any difference to quality.

But Adobe *is* the creator of PostScript! So, PS or PDF, you won't get rid
of Adobe.

Who wants to get rid of Adobe anyway? But I suppose PS is more open
than PDF.

After some trepidation I've begun using PDF to transfer
*manufacturing* information for some purposes. No problems yet (knock
on wood) with precise dimensions and so on. It helps to deal withe
folks who really know what they are doing.

PDF is an open standard. Well, it's openly documented anyway, which is
more than can be said for most (all?) MS file formats.

AIUI PDF is based on postscipt anyway.

OK, you got me. I thought postscript came from some printer manufacturer.
Still, I can convert postscript to Autocad, which might be useful. PDF seems
very restrictive.
