Building first board to interface with Computer

I would like to work on my first electronics project. I am a VB programmer,
but haven't worked with any hardware before. Is there a good trainer kit
with board I can purchase for my first project?

as an example. I didn't look but there are probably many references on the
inet. Radio Shack used to sell a similar kit and perhaps still do.
