building an ipod car charger

Can anyone advise me on how I can build a car charger for a firewire-only
ipod? How much current can you pull from the cigarette socket? And what
voltages does the firewire charging require?

If you have a normal household 240 volt charger, then buy a small 12 volt to
240 volt inverter for under $100. It will run an 18 volt laptop happily from
a 12 volt cigarette lighter.

Surely there must be a way to do thish without using an inverter. e.g.
