** Hi,
got one of these from WES :
http://www.doss.com.au/zd99-hobbyists-soldering-station/
Costs only $20.
Described by them as " 48W Variable Temperature Controlled".
Fraid it is not temperature controlled.
The iron is 48 watts all right, but it is also 240 volts - the base contains
a simple triac dimmer.
It is quite slow to reach operating temp and adjusting the temperature is a
matter of judgement - probably be OK for light soldering work and as a spare
iron.
Tips are available in 4 sizes ( from 0.5 to 3mm) for $4.12 each and have
some kind of white coating on them to prevent seizing in the barrel.
