Broken Tascam TSR-8 Reel To Reel Tape Recorder!!

Drats! Ready to record a new tune on my low mileage TSR-8 and it looks like
it died. I was rewinding a tape and the machine began to slow down
dramatically, which is not something it normally does. The machine just about
stopped. So, I took the tape out of the tape path and just put it "reel to
reel" and it began to rewind good and fast UNTIL all the lights came on (like
when you first turn the machine on) and it stopped. Now it won't run at all.
It powers up when you turn it on, but as soon as you try to make it play or
rewind or fast forward, it moves a smidgeon and then it re-sets. All the
lights come on as though it was turned off and on again.

It never did anything like this before and the manual doesn't address this.

Any leads, ideas as to how to trouble shoot this?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

Sounds like you need to replace the capacitors in the power supply. If
you're not experienced with electronics, I'd recommend getting the
unit to a tech for a reliable estimate instead of using internet
guesswork!
good luck

Ben,
Thanks for your input. I was thinking power supply too. I work on old tube
guitar amps but am not too experienced with newer stuff, and certainly not with
logic circuits.

I'll have a go at it and if all else fails, will take it to a tech!
