I would like to find out if anyone has plans available to build a
bio-feedback machine.

What kind of biofeedback? there are literally hundreds of actions you
can 'feedback'.

Dear Onestone

I did not know that there where that many types out there on bio-feedback, I
guess I am just looking for something basic, like galvanic skin resistance
to visual and audio response. What I am trying to do is control pain in my
lower back without having to take so much pain medication. And to help
improve mental function. I would just like to be able to experiment around
on different aspects of bio-feedback on myself.

Thanks
William

No, that's feedforward, you pass it on, not give it back to yourself. By
the time it arrives back to you it has mutated.

Hi William,
This is nothing to do with electronics, but what condition is your
mattress in? I had lower back pain/sciatica so severe that it took
about a minute to straighten up after driving my car for any distance.
I could hardly walk sometimes. I eventually got a new "healthopedic"
mattress designed for good lower back support. The pain was 99% gone
within 3 weeks, and now after a few months is gone completely. Just my
2 cents worth.

Dear Bob

My mattress is in very good condition, me and my wife where just married and
her grandmother had bought us a brand new mattress and boxsprings. It is
very comfortable, but I have a pinched nerve between C6 and C7 that was
fused with a bone graft and titanium plate. I also have a herniated disc in
my lower back. I have had problems with different parts of my body for over
18 plus years. Doctors cannot figure it out.

Thank you
William

Hi William,
I'm really sorry to hear that your back has been having these
really bad problems. I've had ongoing problems with a leg which got
smashed up in a motorbike accident many years ago, putting me on
crutches for about 3 years in total, so I can sympathise.
I'll let you know if I can find any info about biofeedback which
might be of some kind of help to you.

Regards,
Bob

G'day again William,
You might find something appropriate at one of these URLs...

Good luck.

Hi William,

I used to have a lot of lower back pain, but I got a waterbed and have
not had any problems since. The support is far better than even the
best mattress that I have tried...the first little while it seemed
more uncomfortable than even a foam mattress but after a week or two,
I really noticed a difference! Now, if I sleep on a regular mattress,
after a few days my back starts to bug me again....

Obviously I can't say that this is a cure-all (even for you) but you
might want to look into waterbeds as a part of your back therapy.

Good luck!

I have done some work with biofeedback - see
http://www.mixstatics.com.au/substantive.htm for some references to
publications.

From following posts you look like you actually want to control your pain
not some autonomic function of your body. Biofeedback is not generally
designed to do this. Biofeedback is generally to try to consciously control
some autonomic (automatic) function of your body. For us it was blood
pressure.

You may want to investigate TENS units instead. These are used by
physiotherapists a fair bit. Dick Smith used to have a kit for them which I
built but I think they no longer have them. I couldn't find it on their web
site anyway.

There are a lot of Australian companies that sell ready made units. Here
are some sites (in the order that Google found them).

a good physio should be able to help
and order you a TENS machine.

Electro stimulation.
Can change the intensity, pulse rate, constant or ramps up

Or at least have one so you can try it.

Don't know how well it would work on your back.

I used/use one on lower leg and right arm
due to nerve damage from a accident.

For me it helped a lot.

Works well but can take a while before
you body cancels out the pain when its not being used.
